Established on 2nd February 1835 during the British Raj, Madras Medical College (MMC) holds the distinction of being the second oldest medical college in India, after Calcutta Medical College. Located in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, MMC has been at the forefront of medical education, research, and healthcare delivery for nearly two centuries.
The institution was founded by Dr. D. Mortimer, with an initial intake of 20 students. Today, it stands as a monumental institution affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). MMC's 88-acre campus in Park Town, Chennai, houses state-of-the-art facilities, historic buildings, and a rich academic environment.
MMC operates four major government hospitals: Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Government Ophthalmic Hospital, and Institute of Child Health, providing comprehensive healthcare services to millions annually while serving as primary teaching hospitals for our students.

The 5.5-year MBBS program (including internship) admits 250 students annually through NEET-UG. The curriculum integrates basic medical sciences with clinical training across our affiliated hospitals.
MMC offers 56 specialities in MD, MS, and Diploma programs with 412 PG seats. Admissions are through NEET-PG. Programs emphasize research, clinical expertise, and academic leadership.
Advanced 3-year super-specialty programs in 14 disciplines including Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Gastroenterology. Admissions through NEET-SS.
MMC houses 42 clinical and para-clinical departments equipped with modern infrastructure and staffed by renowned faculty.
Madras Medical College maintains a robust research ecosystem with over 300 ongoing projects annually. Our faculty and students publish approximately 500 research papers yearly in indexed journals. MMC's research focuses on tropical diseases, public health, clinical trials, and biomedical innovation.
The institution houses 12 dedicated research centers including the Center for Stem Cell Research, Center for Genetic Disorders, and the ICMR Center for Advanced Research in Diabetes. Annual research funding exceeds ₹45 crores from national and international agencies like ICMR, DBT, DST, and WHO.

Admissions to all programs at Madras Medical College are based on national entrance examinations as per Government of Tamil Nadu and National Medical Commission guidelines. 85% of seats are reserved for Tamil Nadu students, 15% for all India quota.
